GE Security launches FireworX for small buildings

LAS VEGAS--For dealers working on smaller buildings, GE Security launched its new FireworX brand of conventional and intelligent fire panels, here at ISC West.

What's the profile of a dealer who would use this product? Steve Hein, general manager fire and life-safety products for GE Security, said it “would be someone who does less than $50,000 worth of fire ... who also does security, video, access, [someone for whom] fire is only one of the [installations] he does.”

FireworX is billed as bringing high-end installation and troubleshooting features downmarket for smaller applications. It's similar to GE's recently introduced iO product (Search “GE iO: Intelligent fire for all” at www.securitysystemsnews.com for details), which was aimed at the same market, but different dealers (GE's EST channel).

Hein said FireworX is particularly good for retrofit jobs, which are picking up in this economy, he said, because it offers low installation cost and advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Problems can be diagnosed remotely, he said, via the Internet or using a dailer connection. The system sends an addressable alert (also via the Internet or dailer) if it is dirty, Hein said. The product also “offers big savings on installation,” he said, because installers can use existing wires in retrofit jobs.
