Guard company owner faces fraud charges

ISLIP, N.Y. - The president and owner of a company that provided security guards for federal buildings on Long Island was charged with fraud for failing to train and adequately supervise his employees. Jerry Brooks, president and owner of Engineering Services Unlimited of Huntsville, Ala., was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Central Islip, N.Y., in May. His company had a contract to supply security officers from February 2000 to February 2003 to the U.S. District Court here, the Immigration and Naturalization Service offices in Garden City, Long Beach and Riverhead, N.Y. The company also provided security guards to the Internal Revenue Services offices and Social Security Administration offices in several Long Island towns. According to the company’s contract, it was required to provide employees with training in 27 areas, including firearms use, CPR and conducting searches. An investigation showed the guards only had some firearms training. Brooks faces up to five years in federal prison, if convicted.
