Home sprinkler systems, cheaper than you think

QUINCY, Mass.--How much does it really cost to install a home sprinkler system? A Fire Protection Research Foundation study, released Sept. 11, shows that the cost to the average homebuilder is $1.61 per sprinklered square foot. “There’s no question that an investment in a residential fire sprinkler system can prove to be a life-saving decision, but when seeking cost information to make that decision, people are often hard-pressed to find true costs,” said Kathleen Almand, executive director of the Fire Protection Research Foundation in a prepared statement. “We found that professionals in this field and the average person were in great need of reliable information in these areas-the findings from our latest research project provide costs based on actual data.” The study looked at 10 communities across the United States and one in Canada, which were chosen based on diversity in location, sprinkler ordinance longevity, housing style and sprinkler system variables.
