ICC okays electronic monitors

ROCKLAND, Mass. - Further validating its business model, MIJA announced that the International Code Council has amended its International Fire Code to allow the use of electronic monitoring devices, such as those produced by MIJA, to supplement 30-day interval inspections. Utah was the first state to allow use of such monitors in April.
MIJA markets EN-Gauge, electronic monitors that attach to fire extinguishers to monitor for pressurization, obstruction and location. Company executives promote the product as a more effective method to ensure compliance and product operation than physical inspection by fire personnel.
The ICC amended section 906.2 of its International Fire Code to allow approved devices in lieu of physical inspection. The change in ICC code becomes effective on the first of the year.
A commercial version of EN-Gauge is now available, and a residential version will be available starting in the third quarter.
