Management is key at Alliant

BURBANK, Calif. -With one acquisition already under its belt, Alliant Protection Services is gearing up for additional acquisitions in the near future, including two that could close early this year. The company is led by Tom Rankin, former head of Protection One and a veteran of the alarm industry. But unlike some companies in the security industry, Alliant’s management team is not just comprised of security industry professionals, but professionals from outside the industry. That’s what attracted lead investor Warburg Pincus. Oliver Goldstein, vice president of Warburg Pincus in New York, characterized the management team as broad and complementary to Rankin’s expertise. “Clearly management is always critical for us in our investment decisions,” said Goldstein. That team includes Paul Udell as vice president of mergers and acquisitions. Udell has worked for security industry finance firm SAFE and is the founder of Alarm Acquisitions. Another key person in the management team is Sherman Brawner, vice president of engineering and a former coworker of Rankin’s at Protection One, Westec and API. Rounding out the management team are Drew Skarupa, chief financial officer of Alliant, with a background in the start up field, Christine Solzberg, vice president of human resources and a former government employee and Doug Wankel, vice president of operations. Most recently Wankel worked for Atlas Air Cargo and was a former employee of the Drug Enforcement Agency.
