MATANUSKA SUSITNA BOROUGH, Alaska--The AP reported on July 23 that the Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services has begun charging for some false fire alarms.
The first response is free, but a second false alarm costs $150 and it goes up an additional $25 each time after that. Fire Chief James Steele told The Anchorage Daily News the fees should recover costs and encourage people to maintain their alarm systems.
The department responded to 98 false alarms in 2008 and 72 in 2007.
