Notifier signs ups D-Tec

NORTHFORD, Conn.--Notifier expects to grow its business as the result of an agreement announced Nov. 10 with video smoke detection manufacturer D-Tec. “D-Tec is a world leader and pioneer of video smoke detection technology,” said Jayson Kneen, communications manager for Notifier. “We’ve developed an interface to their program, so we can expand our reach to applications we weren’t able to protect previously [such as large atriums, or airport hangars],” he added. Notifier is a division of the Honeywell Fire Groups. D-Tec, a division of Dedicated Micros, has been in business in the U.K. for a number of years. It formally entered the U.S. market at the end of 2007. (Search “D-Tec comes to U.S.” at www.securitysystemsnews.com for details.) D-Tec’s VSD system uses algorithms to detect flames and smoke from standard CCTV video footage. The system alerts operators when it detects smoke. D-Tec is one of very few VSD manufacturers. The other established company is AxonX of Sparks, Md. Those paying attention at the June NFPA show in Las Vegas may have anticipated this partnership. D-Tec had a spot in the Notifier booth at that show. “They were in our booth, but there was no formal agreement at that time,” Kneed said. Notifier dealers were given a sneak peak at the D-Tec system at Honeywell’s annual distributors conference in October. The agreement will work well for both parties, Kneen said, “We’re well established in the U.S. market, and they can sell through us. They don’t have an agreement with any other fire manufacturer, and we don’t have an agreement with any other VSD manufacturer. We did our due diligence and determined that they were the best team to work with.”
