Security software and servers find a match

November 6, 2003 ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Lenel Systems and NEC Solutions have signed an agreement to increase the availability, or lessen the downtown, of computer servers that support security systems. The partnership will bring together Lenel’s HA-OnGuard security management solution with NEC’s Express 5800 / 320lb High Availability servers. Company officials expect the combination will result in a system that will deliver 99.999 percent or better availability, meaning less than five minutes of unplanned downtime a year. In comparison, the servers on which security systems traditionally run offer an availability rate of 99 percent, or 48 hours or more of downtown per year. Mike Mitsch, senior security director of marketing at NEC Solutions, said the partnership and creation of a fault tolerant servers will simplify security for end-users. The reason is that redundant security systems are often deployed with a group of servers connected together, called cluster servers. But these servers often require extensive application programming and maintenance at the time of installation. By combining Lenel’s and NEC’s systems together in an out-of-the box system, it eliminates the application programming or maintenance requirement.
