Steve Keefer steps down from monitoring software company

IRVINE, Calif.--Two years after selling his company to General Electric, Steve Keefer, founder and president of Monitoring Automation Systems, retired from the company on June 30. Keefer's retirement from MAS marks a 23-year run in the security industry. His foray into the market came in the early years of his business when a potential customer approached the company and asked if its software could be adapted for use by central stations. It could, and a new business focus was born. GE completed the purchase of MAS in June 2003. Keefer decided to stay on through the transition, most recently serving as president of the division. MAS falls under GE's Infrastructure, Security unit. Keefer said he will take a few months off before deciding his next career move. However, his ties to GE have not been cut. "I will be helping GE in a consulting role," Keefer told Security Systems News. "They have asked me to help on some projects," he said. His replacement has not yet been announced.
