The world market for Video Smoke Detection (VSD) technology is expected to reach $36 million in 2011, up from $10 million in 2007, according to a report released in February by IMS Research. VSD integrates image recognition and analytics technology into standard video surveillance cameras to identify distinctive characteristics of smoke and flame patterns. “Typical smoke detectors rely on smoke migrating from the source of the fire to the actual detector,†said James McManus, market research analyst for IMS. “A camera system set up with VSD technology can cover distances, so as soon as smoke and flames can be seen, it can be detected.â€Â
With growth concentrated primarily in the non-residential market, VSD solutions are expected to become more affordable as the technology shifts from server-based solutions to direct installations in video surveillance devices. SSN
