Passing on the family security business

Family-owned businesses account for 90 percent of American enterprises and, based on my nearly 20 years in the electronic and life safety industries, I estimate that an overwhelming majority of industry businesses are family owned. Most family-business owners want to keep their business in the family, yet nearly one-third of these companies don’t make it to the next generation. (This is known as the “Rule of Thirds.”)
