PORTLAND, Maine - A small electrical contractor based here is making its mark in the local fire systems installation market, signing on with national equipment manufacturers and adding some additional staff to help grow the business.

Town & Country Electric, based here, now brings in about 20 percent of its gross sales in fire installations, but would like to boost that number up to 100 percent, said Larry McMahon, president of Town & Country.

QUINCY, Mass. - The National Fire Protection Association in late February called on its code writers to convene in a meeting to discuss the life safety issues surrounding two deadly nightclub accidents that occurred less than a week apart.

Las Vegas fire debate nears formal resolution

LAS VEGAS - A controversial policy introduced more than a year ago to institute verified response for fire alarms here is near a formal resolution between fire officials and alarm industry representatives, according to local fire officials.

A series of meetings and communications between officials at the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association have resulted in a document that will be distributed to alarm industry officials and local alarm companies.

Bill seeks to change building code

AUGUSTA, Maine - A bill before the Maine legislature is seeking to change the building code that fire companies and the construction industry in the state adhere to.

Under the bill, Maine’s different municipalities, which now subscribe to codes individually chosen by the municipality, would all meet the requirements of the Building Officials Code Administrators International, known as the BOCA code.

Gentex reports profit increase of 43 percent

NFPA to offer building code seminar
QUINCY, Mass. - A two-day seminar on NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code will be held May 16 and 17 before the opening of the 2003 NFPA World Safety Conference & Exposition in Dallas, which runs May 18 through May 21.

Testing, inspection bill moves through House

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A bill that calls for the certification of fire sprinkler testing and inspection technicians is making its way through the Utah legislature and is expected to become law with little opposition, according to industry officials.

At press time, HB47, which would only apply to commercial or other public sprinkler systems, had been passed by the House and was waiting for approval from the state senate.
