VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Avigilon has donated a high-definition surveillance system to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre (DEWC) based here, according to a company statement.
The DEWC, located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Canada, serves more than 300 women, children and seniors daily and provides shelter for up to 60 women each night. “With the detail provided by the Avigilon system we can monitor our grounds closely and ensure the women who need our facility have a safe place to go,” said Fiona York, fund development coordinator at DEWC.
The security system was installed at the shelter in late 2012. At such venues in Canada, more than 71 percent of users report physical abuse and threats of violence, the statement said.
The DEWC donation is the first through Avigilon's new corporate social responsibility program. Through the initiative, the company will provide a set amount of HD surveillance systems to charitable organizations in need of them.
