Charleston Mayor says 'can sprinkler fees' Brief

CHARLSTON, S.C.--Charleston Mayor Joe Riley in early July said, to encourage the installation of sprinklers, the city should get rid of impact fees it charges businesses that do install sprinklers, Charlotte.com reported. Ninety percent of the commercial and industrial buildings in the area served by Charleston Water System lack sprinkler systems, included one where nine fire fighters recently perished in a fire. Businesses who have sprinklers must pay between $28,000 and $56,900 for common connections to water pipes. In addition, the Water System charges a tap fee in the $14,000 to $20,000 range. Finally, the business must also pay a monthly fee of $227, even if no water is used.
