How I Use My System: Jack Doyle

Jack Doyle, business development manager for Doyle Security Systems, is focused on sales and marketing campaign with the company as well as operational efficiencies. Security Systems News talked with Doyle about the system he uses at home.

What kind of system do you have?

I have a Honeywell Lyric controller. … I'm using a combination of Honeywell 5800 series sensors and the new Honeywell SiX sensors. … I started using the Lyric as a beta-test; I had been using the wireless Lynx 5200, prior to that. Prior to the official release of this Honeywell Lyric, I wanted to test it out and see if it was going to be right for Doyle. So, I started using it in my home for me and my family, and my experience thus far has been pretty positive.

Why this particular setup?

From the company stand point, so I could test it. But, what I like about it from a consumer standpoint is that it updates [itself, via the Wi-Fi connection]. It certainly has a very nice aesthetic feel to it, versus some of the other options out there. … It's got a pretty easy set-up and interface for adding new devices, for using the system on a day-to-day basis, for bypassing and different modes of arming.

What is one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without?

The most important part to me are the key, the basic functionalities—the arm-away and arm-stay modes. … The ability to have my system armed when I'm gone gives me peace of mind. To build on that a little bit, I don't think I'd want to live without my motion-activated cameras that I also have with the system. That gives me some added peace of mind.

Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends?

I think DIY is going to be huge. I think that my generation—I'm 33—and those, probably, 35 and under, they buy in a different way. … I think they're starting to view security more as a commodity and are much more advanced when it comes to home networking.
