Integrators '20 under 40' 2015—Berkly Trumbo

Berkly Trumbo, 39

Senior director, G4S Secure Integration

Jupiter, Fla.

Berkly Trumbo was working in IT integration in the D.C. area after college. Then came 9/11.

“I felt I wanted to do something that really mattered, so I made a conscious shift in my career path,” he said. “I was in the security industry at a very interesting time,” he said.

He started focusing on mass notification. After consulting for a number of years with end users he went to work for Siemens, where he was a national business manager and became its expert on campus security. A few years ago, he went to work for G4S, the systems integrator and project management company.

Trumbo says he feels good about his role in the industry. “No. 1, it's very rewarding. I go to bed every night feeling good about it. No. 2, we're protecting people from bad guys. And the third pillar is that it's so dynamic and behind the scenes. It's a little cool. I can end up in rooms where nobody goes. There's a James Bond thing going on,” he said.

Trumbo said he's excited about PSIM, “even though it's become a four-letter word to some,” and the cloud. “We're moving to the next generation. Technology is getting better, faster and cheaper. Big data plus the cloud, that's what the future will be around,” he said.

Talented young people will stream into the physical security industry in coming years, he said. “It used to be just cameras and access control, that's not the case anymore. With software playing more of a part, mobile and drones, we'll get more Silicon Valley types.

“We have to keep up with the pace of technology and be a forerunner in that space.”
