Mircom opens U.S. distribution port

NIAGRA FALLS-Mircom, a Canadian manufacturer of fire alarm systems, on April 1 opened a new office from which it will base its U.S. operations. The company has a number of customers on the West Coast and in the Southeast, but ultimately decided to stay close to its home base in Toronto. It closed on the 12,500-square-foot space in mid-March, said Mark Falbo, executive vice president of this family-owned business. "Initially the location is meant to be a logistics center to better support the U.S. market," he said. "We expect to look at doing some light assembly there within the next 12 months." Falbo described Mircom as an engineering, manufacturing and distribution company that specializes in fire detection and life safety systems. It has three brands, Mircom, Securtron and Summit. (Summit is sold through distributors such as ADI and Tri-Ed.) In Canada, he said, Mircom has a 25 percent market share. And the 15-year-old company is growing at 20 percent per year. He said Mircom is the "largest independent privately held company [in the fire detection field]." It has 340 employees and he said dealers like Mircom because it’s a significant "alternative to the multi-nationals. They like dealing with family ownership." ssn
