Loss control drives growth at TVA

SAN DIEGO - TVA Fire & Life Safety, a growing fire safety and risk management company here, has tapped a loss prevention and industrial risk executive to build its loss control business and use that sector as a gateway for promoting its other service offerings.

With the appointment of Dana Parker as executive vice president of business development, TVA, a 20-year-old company, is looking to boost its revenues in the loss control sector by 30 percent over the next year, said Jim Tomes, president of TVA.

Texas school district uses FSD

HURST, Texas - Fire Systems Design has won a contract to supply the Garland, Texas, school district with a Notifier fire alarm system that will support the districts more than 80 schools and support buildings.

With a student population of more than 55,000, the Garland, Texas, Independent School District, the 13th largest district in Texas, has set a five-year upgrade schedule.

BURNABY, British Columbia - A fire firm here is seeing efficiencies, including significant advances on its competition, by adopting new technology for its field service personnel and back office functions.

Over the last year, Bartec Fire Safety Systems has seen savings of about one to two hours per days for each of its 15 technicians and sales staff by implementing Tablet PCs, used as virtual workstations, said company president Rob Barrett.

Fire bill: UL alarm inspections needed

AUGUSTA, Maine - Fire alarm installers here are advocating the introduction of a bill that would require third-party inspection and certification of certain fire alarm systems and would standardize the inspection process throughout the entire state.

The proposed bill, which is yet unnamed, would relieve the burden of system inspections from the fire marshal’s office by naming a third party to conduct inspections of fire alarm systems, according to Harty Norris, president of fire alarm firm Norris Inc.
