NFPA to offer building code seminar
QUINCY, Mass. - A two-day seminar on NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code will be held May 16 and 17 before the opening of the 2003 NFPA World Safety Conference & Exposition in Dallas, which runs May 18 through May 21.

Testing, inspection bill moves through House

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A bill that calls for the certification of fire sprinkler testing and inspection technicians is making its way through the Utah legislature and is expected to become law with little opposition, according to industry officials.

At press time, HB47, which would only apply to commercial or other public sprinkler systems, had been passed by the House and was waiting for approval from the state senate.

NYC adopts NEC code

NEW YORK - New York City has adopted NFPA 70, the National Electric Code from the National Fire Protection Association, as the city’s new electrical code, with some localized amendments.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has also indicated he intends to update the city’s electrical code to the 2002 NEC edition next year, according to NFPA officials.

WASHINGTON -The advisory committee of one of the country’s most powerful fire protection advocacy groups has endorsed the concept of a federal tax break as an incentive for the installation of fire sprinkler systems in residential and commercial buildings.

Although the movement for the tax incentive is still in its infancy, sprinkler industry officials said that the resolution from the National Advisory Council of the Congressional Fire Services Institute, a non-profit group that educates members of Congress on fire issues, is one of the first major steps in the development of legislation and an important stride toward broadening awareness of the issue.

Illinois legis. passes sprinkler contractor bill

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Legislators here in December voted to approve the passage of legislation that mandates a licensing program for sprinkler contractors in the state.

Chubb CEO set to resign in Feb.

LONDON - Global fire and security firm Chubb said on Tuesday that its chief executive officer would resign in mid-February to return to the United States.

Robert Gasparini has held that post at the company since late 2000, when Chubb demerged from its former owner, conglomerate Williams Holdings, as well as through a series of failed merger talks last spring with Securitas.

Silco Fire Protection extends reach with major acquisition

CINCINNATTI - With a purchase of a fire protection division owned by a large gas and welding distributor, Silco Fire Protection, a full-service fire protection firm based here has increased its geographic reach throughout Ohio.

Silco’s acquisition of the fire division of compressed gas giant Praxair Distribution gives Silco a total of four locations and a team of nearly 30 additional employees, including a general manager that had overseen the division for the past several years.

Fire association moves HQ, prepares for additional staff

CHICAGO - A national trade association here that represents fire equipment distributors has moved to larger office space to make room for some additional staffing needed to roll out a new certification program and added technical training to offer to its membership.

The National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors in January completed its move, and is now preparing for the addition of another technical staff member in the next few months to help the association develop a national certification program that would encompass two different areas, service technicians for portable fire equipment as well for a pre-engineered systems technician.

Jury finds fire firm liable for fire

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -A jury recently found Grinnell Fire Protection and records storage company Diversified Records negligent in a 1997 fire that destroyed the storage company’s facility.
