Dublin, Ohio deploys SecurOS Soffit from ISS to boost pedestrian safety

WOODBRIDGE, N.J.—ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), a global provider of video intelligence and data awareness solutions, has announced the deployment of its SecurOS Soffit pedestrian safety system by the City of Dublin, Ohio.

The AI-powered Soffit, which automatically detects the presence of people at crosswalks and dynamically illuminates their path across, was installed at the Brand Road pedestrian crossing near Coventry Woods Drive in response to residents’ concerns about visibility and vehicle speeds.

ISSAfter reviewing traffic conditions, pedestrian volumes, and speed data, the city selected the Soffit to serve as an additional safety measure at the crossing for its ability to provide on-demand illumination, heightening pedestrian visibility only when crossings are occupied.

Unlike standard streetlights that illuminate an entire area continuously, the Soffit utilizes advanced video analytics to detect pedestrians as they approach a crosswalk. The system then directs a dynamic LED lighting array to “escort" the pedestrian across the street, illuminating only the person and their immediate path. This targeted approach increases driver awareness while minimizing unnecessary light pollution.

"The Soffit has exceeded our expectations by providing the right amount of illumination to increase driver awareness of the presence of pedestrians in the crosswalk at night," said Marc Dilsaver, transportation program manager for the City of Dublin. "Greater awareness is leading to more drivers yielding to pedestrians, and that’s the goal."

The system also provides a variety of actionable data, as well as the ability to integrate into traditional crosswalk safety measures like rectangular rapid flash beacons (RRFBs), LED-enhanced signs and HAWK systems.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Dublin on the first deployment of SecurOS Soffit in Ohio. This project demonstrates the city’s forward-thinking commitment to public safety and innovation, and we’re excited to see how our technology is making a real difference for pedestrians and drivers alike,” said Joe Harvey, ITS market sector leader at ISS. “By working together, we’re setting a new benchmark for pedestrian safety throughout the region.”
