New Michigan-based cybersecurity startup for SMOs announced

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced earlier this week his new cybersecurity startup for small and medium organizations (SMOs) named SensCy.

Snyder announced the launch of the startup on its website on July 26, along with three business partners. The name alludes to the company bringing a “sensible cyber solution to SMOs that includes sound policy, best practices, education, and a clear understanding of their cyberhealth to dramatically reduce their chances of a catastrophic cybersecurity event.”

The company touts over 100 combined years of IT and cybersecurity experience. The announcement named Bhushan Kulkarni as COO, Dave Kelly as CTO, and David Behen as Chief Client Success Officer.

Snyder, who serves as SensCy CEO, has previous experience in the tech industry. In 1991 he served as the Executive Vice President of computer company Gateway until 1996, where he served as president and COO until 1997.

SensCy has partnered with the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM) to offer services to its members. “More than ever, small businesses need to be protected from cyberattacks,” SBAM Senior Vice President Scott Lyon stated in the press release. “However, typically cyber solutions are too expensive and complicated for small businesses. This new partnership connects small businesses with cybersecurity services at an affordable rate, from a Michigan-based company.”

SensCy offers its services to companies based on their size for what it says is “10 percent the cost” of a full-time cybersecurity professional. “Forty-three percent of data breaches involve small and medium sized businesses, yet most lack any type of cybersecurity defense plan,” the company noted. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), 47 percent of American adults have had their personal information exposed online.
