NFPA urges Halloween fire safety as holiday approaches

QUINCY, Mass.—The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is reminding consumers to keep fire safety top of mind as Halloween celebrations ramp up, citing the fire risks associated with decorations, candles and costumes.

NFPAAccording to NFPA, an estimated average of 835 home structure fires each year between 2020 and 2024 began with decorations, resulting in three deaths, 29 injuries and $18 million in direct property damage. Nearly half of those fires occurred when decorations were placed too close to a heat source, while about one-third were started by candles.

"From decorating with jack-o-lanterns to costume parties and trick-or-treating, Halloween includes a host of celebrations and activities that introduce the risk of fire," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA's vice president of outreach and advocacy. "Fortunately, the vast majority of these risks can be prevented with a little added awareness and caution."

In addition, the association recommends testing all smoke alarms in the home before Halloween festivities begin.

"Halloween is filled with spooky fun, but it also presents lurking fire hazards that can quickly turn the festive holiday into a truly scary one," NFPA said in its advisory.
