Strong future growth for patient home monitoring, PERS devices, report says

GOTHENBURG, Sweden—Approximately 2.8 million patients worldwide used home-based remote monitoring devices in 2012, and that number is expected to grow in the coming years, according to new research from Berg Insight, an analyst firm based here.

The firm forecasts that the number of home monitoring systems with integrated communication capabilities would grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.9 percent between 2011 and 2017 to reach 9.4 million systems worldwide.

“Widespread use of remote patient monitoring is still years away, but we are moving towards an age where [monitored health] solutions will become part of standard care pathways,” Lars Kurkinen, telecom analyst at Berg Insight, said in a press release. “We believe 2013 will be a landmark year as the [monitored health] industry shifts into a strong growth phase that will last for many years to come."

According to the firm, strong market growth in 2013 and beyond will be fueled by new developments in the [monitored health] industry, such as readmission penalties in the U.S. established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
