Teleco to offer home monitoring system

January 27, 2005 PRINCETON, N.J. - Telecommunications company RCN Corp. announced plans to offer a home monitoring application that enables customers to use a personal computer and its high-speed Internet service to remotely view activities at their home or business. Branded RCN WebWatch, existing customers of the company’s Megaband high-speed Internet service can add WebWatch for an additional $9.95 per month. RCN will install one camera at the location and provide 24-hour technical support. Up to three more cameras can be added to the customer’s account and are available for an additional cost from retail stores. The devices operate on the 802.11g wireless standard and include motion detection features. Additional applications available include image storage and notification once a camera is activated. Alerts can be sent to e-mail accounts, mobile phones or other networked devices. WebWatch will launch in Boston and be available in other markets in the coming months. RCN also does business in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, eastern Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
