Axis debuts 3D surveillance camera models

CHELMSFORD, Mass.—Axis Communications, a provider of network video surveillance solutions, is introducing a collection of 3D surveillance camera models to be used in conjunction with Autodesk Revit software, according to a company statement.

The new models, called Axis Camera Families, will allow security system designers to interactively visualize camera coverage, select the proper Axis cameras for surveillance needs and optimize the system layout.

With the new 3D models, security system designers can place different Axis network camera icons directly into CAD building plans to illustrate what the real-life camera setup will look like once installed, while also showcasing the areas the surveillance system will cover. This mitigates the risk of unexpected blind spots, the statement said.

“Axis Camera Families is extremely helpful for our clients [who] often cannot visualize what will be seen when construction is complete,” said Todd Kotlaba, associate and systems project manager at TLC Engineering for Architecture, who received an early release of the system. “The information also identifies pixels per foot for the camera selected, which helps meet our client's expectation for the quality of the viewable image and recording resolution.”

Axis said the cameras, by using the exact tool flow employed by architects and engineers, enable security system planning to be fully integrated into building design.
