IMS Research clarifies the cloud

AUSTIN, Texas—A new report published by IMS Research, titled “The North American and European Markets for Access Control,” addresses some of the confusion surrounding cloud-based access control, according to an IMS statement.
The report distinguishes between two main types of access control as a service (ACaaS) offerings: true cloud and rack server. True cloud is defined as “multitenant,” which is when “one application serves all clients and each client's data sets are partitioned on a server and kept secure,” according to Blake Kozak, senior analyst at IMS and author of the report. “The application itself serves the entire ecosystem.”
Rack servers, on the other hand, are not defined as a true cloud offering due to the high costs associated with building private data centers and the complexity of providing a multitenant solution. While rack servers have some characteristics of “true cloud,” the economies of scale are different, according to the report, with many involved in the market being regional dealers, software providers and alarm monitoring companies with smaller customer bases.
