Security Industry Association releases protocol

SILVER SPRING, Md.—The Security Industry Association today announced the release of a version of its Open Supervised Device Protocol specification, according to a company statement.
The SIA OSDP is a communication protocol that enables devices such as card readers, control panels or other security management systems to work together. The solution moves beyond widely used industry standards, adding features such as bi-directional communication, which can pave the way for more sophisticated security applications such as Smartcard technology, PKI and mobile device access.
“This is an important milestone,” Steve Van Till, SIA Standards chairman and CEO of Brivo Systems, said in a prepared statement. “OSDP fills a glaring need within the industry and this release demonstrates that SIA Standards is actively doing its part to enable secure and trusted identity solutions. The addition of IP support is the next crucial step.”
Future versions of the specification will incorporate practitioner comments and noted best practices. The Access Control & Identity Subcommittee, the SIA Standards Subcommittee group that spearheaded the project, plans to launch an online practitioner forum for the protocol.
