ZBeta releases tech perspective on PKOC, interoperability in access control

SAN FRANCISCO—ZBeta has released its first LabZ Tech Perspective, focusing on the Public Key Open Credential (PKOC) standard and its potential impact on the physical access control market.

The report examines PKOC, an open credential standard developed by the Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) that is based on asymmetric, or public key, encryption. According to ZBeta, the framework is designed to move the industry away from proprietary credential ecosystems, with the goal of improving interoperability and strengthening credential security.

The analysis outlines how PKOC could influence the evolution of access control systems as organizations modernize infrastructure and expand the use of mobile credentials. It also explores practical considerations tied to adoption, including migration requirements, infrastructure readiness, and how PKOC compares with other emerging interoperability efforts such as Aliro.

Zack Brunette, CEO of ZBeta, said the report is intended to help security leaders better understand changes underway in credential technologies and their broader implications.

“As organizations continue modernizing access control infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of mobile credentials, it becomes increasingly important to understand how credential technologies - and the security models behind them - are evolving,” he said.

The publication also marks the launch of ZBeta’s LabZ Tech Perspective series, which the company said will focus on emerging technologies, trends, and strategic challenges in the physical security industry.
