AMAG breaks free: Bold spin-off from Allied will spark innovation

IRVINE, Calif.—Following a spin-off from Allied Universal and a strategic investment by Shore Rock Partners, AMAG Technology is accelerating product development and expanding its capabilities for high-security environments, says CEO David Sullivan.

Why now?

AMAG TechnologyThe spin-off was triggered after Allied recognized that a dedicated growth investor was essential to unlock AMAG’s long-term potential. Allied remains a minority shareholder and commercial partner, underscoring its continued support for AMAG and its customers, Sullivan says.

“Shore Rock Partners really could help maximize our potential for the long term, giving us more autonomy and flexibility to really focus on the development of our products and services,” he said.

The Shore Rock advantage

Based in New York, Shore Rock Partners brings a technology-focused investment background, which Sullivan sees as a perfect fit for AMAG’s innovation goals.

The partnership is expected to drive faster product innovation and improved service levels. Shore Rock’s approach includes exploring strategic investments, additional engineering resources, and even acquisitions that broaden AMAG’s solution set.

“They understand software and hardware as it relates to solutions,” he said. “They’ve already indicated they want to accelerate growth in our technology and service capabilities and make it easier for customers to do business with AMAG.”

Leveraging emerging technologies

Sullivan sees artificial intelligence (AI), biometrics, and mobile credentials as transformative forces for the security industry that will result in reduced false alarms and more qualified information to users for faster, more accurate responses

“AI is going to provide enhanced abilities in reporting and responding, and it creates an ability to validate things in a way we haven’t been able to do before - much quicker,” he said.

While widespread adoption faces a transition curve due to legacy infrastructure, Sullivan stated that “Within the decade, mobile credentials will be one of the largest areas of growth we’ll see in access control.”

Strengthening channel partnerships

The partnership with Shore Rock also opens doors for AMAG’s integrators and channel partners.

“Our investors have deep connections in verticals like utilities, data centers and health care,” Sullivan said. “They’re keen to introduce us to decision-makers, creating new opportunities that we’ll bring to the channel.”

Measuring success through agility and innovation

For AMAG, success in the next decade will hinge on its ability to deliver advanced technology solutions quickly and effectively, Sullivan says.

“The way you’re going to be able to tell that we’ve been successful is that our technologies coming out are going to be more advanced, and we’ll get them out there into the marketplace more quickly,” he said.
