Fire destroys home after alarm fails to send signal

VALRICO, Fla.—A family's home in this Tampa suburb was destroyed by fire in August after an ADT fire alarm did not send a signal to the monitoring center, according to an article from ABC Action News in Tampa.
A history report that the family of the home obtained from ADT shows their panel never alerted the monitoring center, the article said. Hillsborough County fire investigators blame an electrical problem.
According to an expert cited in the article, an electrical problem could include several issues that may have been responsible for disabling the system, such as programming errors, bad wiring or a non-working phone line connection.
The history report also shows that neither the company nor the customer had tested the system since late 2010. When the system was subject to a test it was functioning properly, according to the report.
In an email to ABC Action News cited in the article, ADT said, “Our technicians made numerous attempts to schedule a service call to investigate her case, but were refused access. We always recommend our customers test their systems at least once a month and any time they change their phone service provider to ensure they are connected to our alarm monitoring centers.”
