Outpost launches second-generation gate automation platform

AUSTIN, Texas, and SEATTLE—Outpost, a national truck terminal owner, operator, and automation company, has introduced a second-generation version of its gate automation platform designed to automate access control and inspection workflows at freight terminals, distribution centers and logistics facilities.

The updated platform combines a hardened gate kiosk with computer vision, audio capture and remote operations software to manage truck entry and exit without requiring on-site personnel at each gate. According to the company, the system is intended to reduce congestion, standardize inspections and improve visibility into gate activity.

Outpost“This is the first system of its kind that deploys in one day and eliminates costly gate labor while improving facility efficiency and security,” said Greg Akselrod, Outpost CTO. “Every upgrade in this release is based on learnings across millions of production gate events, from inspection accuracy to driver throughput to exception management. By running the platform across our own network of 30-plus terminals, we experience the edge cases, environmental extremes, operational bottlenecks, and driver friction firsthand, allowing us to solve problems on our own turf before a customer ever experiences them.”

The new kiosk is preassembled and preconfigured prior to shipment, allowing for faster installation compared with traditional gate systems. Outpost says the platform can be deployed and operational within a day, depending on site conditions. Connectivity options include wired Ethernet, fiber and cellular, with support for multiple power configurations.

The platform uses multiple cameras and sensors to capture vehicle and trailer data as trucks pass through the gate. Computer vision software is used to identify license plates, tractors and trailers, while audio systems enable two-way communication between drivers and remote gate operators. The system also supports document capture, including driver identification, and can display instructions and yard navigation information on integrated screens.

For facilities handling refrigerated or high-value cargo, the platform can record trailer condition data, including seal status and reefer information, at entry and exit. When the system flags an exception or cannot complete a transaction autonomously, the event is routed to a remote operations team for review and resolution.

Outpost says the second-generation kiosk was designed for industrial environments, with a stainless-steel enclosure, high-brightness touchscreens and components rated for outdoor use. The company also incorporated hardware redundancy and remote health monitoring to support continuous operation.

The platform is currently deployed at logistics and terminal sites across North America, where it is used to manage millions of annual gate transactions, according to the company.
