FALMOUTH, Maine—Cunningham Security Systems' recent acquisition of SW Alarms is the latest step in the company’s focus on expanding its New England footprint while maintaining the customer-first approach that has fueled its growth, says Owner Dan Major.
From local provider to regional player
Cunningham installs, services and monitors fire alarms, security systems, video surveillance and access control solutions throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, serving a broad range of customers, from homeowners and property managers to schools, hospitals, warehouses and retail businesses.
Major said Cunningham's growth has come through a combination of organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. Key milestones included the acquisition of Protection Professionals in Maine in 2022, Central Signal Corp. in Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 2024, the opening of a Cape Cod branch in 2025 and the recent purchase of SW Alarms.
“Since 2015 we have grown from a single office and Greater Portland, Maine, company to a six-office regional provider,” Major said.
Why SW Alarms made sense
The acquisition of SW Alarms was particularly attractive because of owner Steve Wescott's long-standing reputation and commitment to customer service.
“Steve owned his company for 42 years and clearly has a passion for his work,” Major said. “As an owner-operator he cared deeply about the quality of workmanship and protection of his customers.”
Major said the transaction also strengthens Cunningham's position in southeastern Massachusetts by providing a stronger presence on the South Shore between the company's Wakefield and Cape Cod operations.
“It gives us a foothold south of Boston,” he said. “This allows us to service those customers more effectively and pursue additional acquisition opportunities.”
Keeping local relationships intact
While acquisitions have played an important role in Cunningham's expansion, Major said maintaining local relationships remains critical. Steve and Michael Wescott will remain involved with the business.
The company believes combining Cunningham's resources with the local market knowledge developed by SW Alarms will benefit both organizations and their customers.
“People are everything in this industry,” Major said. “Our customers are entrusting us with the protection of their families and businesses.”
Looking ahead
Major said he expects acquisitions and organic growth to continue working hand in hand as Cunningham builds its presence throughout the region.
“I would like Cunningham to cement itself as one of the largest New England security alarm companies,” he said.
At the same time, Major sees opportunities emerging through technologies such as video monitoring, cloud video storage and cloud-based access control. Regardless of the technologies driving future growth, he said the company's success will continue to hinge on service.
“Customers will continue to look to regional security providers if the level of customer service makes them feel like they are getting value,” Major said. “Our vision is foremost to deliver a gold-standard level of service to our subscribers.”
