PHILADELPHIA—Comcast has launched Xfinity Shield, a home protection platform that combines cybersecurity, physical home awareness and family safety tools into a single service managed through the Xfinity app.
The platform leverages Comcast's network infrastructure, artificial intelligence capabilities and Xfinity Gateway technology to provide protection across connected devices and home networks.
According to the company, the average Xfinity customer now has 36 devices connected to their home WiFi network, increasing exposure to online threats.
"Xfinity Shield represents our vision for the next era of the intelligent home," said Jon Gieselman, chief growth officer, connectivity & platforms at Comcast. "We believe the network should do more than connect devices. It should help protect the people, their personal information, and everything within their homes that depend on our most reliable WiFi every day."
The offering consists of two tiers. WiFi Shield, available at no additional cost to Xfinity Internet customers using Advanced Xfinity Gateways, includes cybersecurity protection, WiFi-based motion awareness and parental controls.
The cybersecurity component, Xfinity CyberSecure, helps protect connected devices from malware, phishing attempts and other online threats. Comcast said it currently identifies, filters and blocks approximately 30 million threats each day.
An optional WiFi Motion feature uses signals between the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices to detect movement within a home without cameras or motion detectors. The platform can send alerts through the Xfinity app when activity is detected.
Family protection tools allow users to manage screen time, create schedules, pause WiFi access and organize devices by household member.
Comcast also introduced Shield Select, a premium version priced at $15 per month. The service includes all WiFi Shield features plus an indoor camera, door and window sensor, cloud video storage and access to emergency response services.
The company said AI-powered cameras can identify people, pets, vehicles and package deliveries.
"Our goal was simple: make protection easier, smarter and more accessible," said Fraser Stirling, Comcast's global chief product officer.
The company said additional capabilities and experiences are planned for the platform in 2027.
