How I Use My System: Barry Chisholm

Barry Chisholm, regional sales manager for American Alarm and Communications, oversees sales in three of the company's offices, including its headquarters in Arlington, Mass. Chisholm started in sales at American Alarm in December 2011, rising to his current position in 2013. He began his career at ADT in 1994. Security Systems News caught up with Chisholm in early January to talk about his home security system.

What kind of system do you have?

I have a DMP system in my home with full perimeter protection—all my doors and windows. I have motions for back-up, then I have fire protection. … It's a hybrid system; it [is] hardwired and wireless. It's designed to accommodate some pets. We also have a lot of remote features with our system, which is really nice. We use the geo-fence a lot, as well as being able to control lights, locks, thermostats remotely.

Why this particular setup?

It's mostly for peace of mind, for protection for [my] wife and children. … We primarily use it when we're gone from the home and when we go to sleep at night. … It's excellent equipment.

What is one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without?

I would say my fire safety—the full fire protection. It's the life safety. I've always said “A burglar will take a few things, but a fire will take everything.”

Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends?

Remote access and the apps are going to continue to really drive the industry. Let's face it, people's smartphones these days are like an appendage. They're a foot away from them, at the most, wherever they go. People are always using their phones and their tablets, so I see the industry continuing to evolve in using more of the apps with security systems.
