How I Use My System: Jeremy Bates

Jeremy Bates has grown up in the industry, and now serves as the president of family-owned Bates Security/Sonitrol of Lexington. “I have done everything; started out [as] the weekend janitor, all the way up through customer service and sales, central station operator, admin-type work, and been running the company the last 10 or so years,” he said. Security Systems News got to talk with him about his new system.

What kind of system do you have?

It is the Lyric [from] Honeywell; its their new control panel. It's a very sleek panel. I like the look and the feel of it. … Overall, I think it's an improved user experience. … It's got a new wireless siren that has a strobe built into it—I really like that.

Why this particular setup?

It is what we were looking to use as our new residential, go-to product. So, I wanted it in my house to make sure I was able to experience it and have our company learn from it. … From a customer perspective, I just think it's overall an improved experience over previous control systems.

What is one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without?

Probably my fire—my life safety features. Whether I have the system on or off, they are always on. I feel safer knowing that if there's something that happens, I and my central station will be dispatching the authorities.

Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends?

There is a lot of talk about DIY and telcos involved in our industry, but I think there is still going to be a place for custom security providers such as ours … in protecting homes and businesses. I think we'll continue to see the home automation to be an important part of the integration with residential security systems.
