NYC mass shooting calls for 'smarter, more responsive' approach to security

NEW YORK—The mass shooting in New York City on July 28 that involved a gunman walking into a Park Avenue commercial building with an assault rifle, killing four people and critically wounding another, serves as a stark reminder of the escalating threat posed by armed individuals in public spaces, says Actuate CEO Ken Francis.

Nearly eight months after United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed walking into a NYC building for an investor conference, Francis points out that in the aftermath of these two tragic incidents, it’s clear that providers must shift their approach from reactive to proactive security solutions.

Actuate“Relying solely on traditional security, passive cameras and guards watching passively are no longer enough,” he said. “In today’s world, prevention begins with early detection. The shooting in NYC demonstrated that weapons carried by attackers are often visible; yet traditional surveillance systems can fall short in providing immediate, actionable insights. Security must be smarter, more responsive.”

Integrating weapons detection into existing infrastructure

Francis stressed the importance of taking a proactive approach by implementing advancements in analytics and AI-driven weapons detection technology to augment any current security setup seamlessly.

These analytics can be adapted for multiple functions - identifying loitering, suspicious activity, or even alerting staff if a weapon is detected on campus. When a threat is identified, systems can trigger automatic responses such as locking doors and alerting emergency responders, saving critical seconds that can save lives.

Adding advanced analytics and AI weapons detection capabilities can transform a security system from passive to proactive, Francis says, noting that even the most vigilant guards can experience fatigue or distraction, but automated systems do not tire and are always vigilant, always covering every aspect of your facility.

“Upgrading your cameras with these capabilities equips your security team with the tools needed to identify potential threats swiftly,” he explained. “This isn’t about replacing personnel but empowering them - adding an intelligent layer that works 24/7.”

Planning for when, not if

Security technology continues to evolve rapidly, offering new ways to stay ahead of threats. From weapons detection to behavioral analytics, these tools empower security teams to act swiftly, accurately and effectively.

Francis advises security decision-makers to not leave the safety of building occupants to chance, and instead, behave on the understanding of “when,” not just “if.”

“Implement systems that empower your security team, protect your people, and prevent tragedies before they occur,” he concluded. “The time for complacency is over. Invest in your security system’s intelligence today and take a significant step toward a safer tomorrow.”
