I got a call from Rapid Response events coordinator Brian Beckwith last night. He was calling to let me know he was going to email me a press release on the next User's Group. Duluth, Minn. enacts new alarm ordinance

DULUTH, Minn.--A Dec. 28 story from NBC affiliate KDLH News 3 reported the Duluth Police Department hopes a new ordinance governing security alarms will reduce the number of false alarms they respond to each year.
Effective January 1st, 2010, alarm system users with more then two false alarms in a one year time period will be assessed a false alarm fee.
The fee schedule is: $100 for the third false alarm, $200 for the fourth, and $300 for the fifth. Each additional false alarm will increase the fee...

PORTLAND, Ore.—Thermal-imaging camera manufacturer FLIR Systems announced Dec. 28 that it paid $20 million cash for the stock of Directed Perception, a provider of pan-tilt motion control systems for commercial and military markets.

FBI reports major fall in crime, but not for everyone

PLATTSBURG, Mo.—A preliminary report released by the FBI last week indicates a significant drop in crime in the first half of 2009, despite perceptions that a poor economy has contributed to growth in overall crime.
Using data from the 11,728 law enforcement agencies who contributed to the report, the FBI found there has been a 4.4 percent reduction in the number of violent crimes as well as a decrease of 6.1 percent in property crimes for the first six months of 2009.
