Diebold secures Central American gold mine

NORTH CANTON, Ohio—Diebold, Inc. has installed video surveillance, access control, intrusion detection and perimeter monitoring at one of the world's largest gold mines, the company announced Oct. 31.
Diebold is implementing security solutions at the Pueblo Viejo mine, which has 25 million ounces of probable gold reserves, in the Dominican Republic.
“Diebold's experience in securing large sites helped us approach the Pueblo Viejo mine project holistically, defining security solutions and strategies to mitigate both external and internal threats,” said Mike Mateo, Diebold VP, Latin America division, in a prepared statement.
The surveillance system includes more than 300 cameras and multiple digital video recorders, as well as a monitoring site, according to the release. Access control devices, the perimeter monitoring system and more than 460 intrusion devices are alarmed. Diebold also installed a monitored access control system.
“As a vast gold reserve, the Pueblo Viejo mine requires numerous electronic security solutions to protect the site's assets,” said Marshal Valentine, country security manager, in a prepared statement. “Diebold's integrated solutions have provided a way to actively and intelligently monitor the entire site, enhancing security from the perimeter to individual locations inside the property.”
The mine, a joint venture of Barrick Gold Corporation and Goldcorp. Inc., began commercial production in January 2013, according to the news release.
