Facebook funds fire alarms in schools

MENLO PARK, Calif.—Social media giant Facebook donated $20,000 on Friday to a nonprofit here that facilitates the installation of monitored fire alarms in schools, a move founders hope will inspire others to match the company's contribution, according to an article from the MenloPark-AthertonPatch, an online news site.
The Ravenswood City School District will be the fund's first beneficiary, according to Virginia Chang Kiraly, who founded the organization, called the Ring The Bell Fund, the article noted.
“Parents all over California assume that our schools are equipped with automatic sprinklers and monitored fire alarms,” Kiraly said. “Many are not and don't have to be legally. There are gaps in the current state legislation that leave our schools vulnerable to fires and other safety issues that could cause a school fire.”
Kiraly, in particular, is referring to modular classrooms, which are not required to be equipped with sprinkler systems or monitored alarms if they are a certain distance from the main school structure, the article noted.
The Ring The Bell Fund recently held a launch party at Facebook headquarters to discuss ways the nonprofit could bolster school safety, according to the report.
