WASHINGTON—The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and OpenAI have announced a strategic alliance aimed at expanding community banks' access to artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cybersecurity capabilities, training and collaboration opportunities.
The partnership connects ICBA's advocacy efforts around AI readiness with OpenAI's Daybreak for Frontline Defenders initiative, which is designed to support defensive cybersecurity operations. Through the alliance, eligible ICBA member banks will gain access to cybersecurity tools and resources intended to help identify vulnerabilities, investigate threats, conduct authorized security testing and prioritize risk mitigation.
“Community banks do not need to navigate the AI era alone,” said Rebeca Romero Rainey, president and CEO of ICBA. “Through our new alliance, ICBA and OpenAI are helping ensure community bankers have a seat at the table as some of the world's most advanced cybersecurity capabilities are developed and deployed."
According to the organizations, participating banks will also receive subsidized access to Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, member-exclusive educational opportunities with OpenAI experts, and access to peer-learning initiatives focused on AI adoption and cybersecurity best practices.
“Protecting America’s financial infrastructure means making sure community banks have access to advanced tools to defend it,” said Sasha Baker, OpenAI's head of national security policy. “The strength of a bank’s defenses shouldn’t depend on the size of its technology budget.”
The announcement builds on ICBA's Secure & AI-Ready America Action Plan, launched earlier this year to promote policies that address AI-enabled cyber risks and improve access to advanced defensive technologies for critical infrastructure organizations.
ICBA and OpenAI said the alliance is intended to help community banks of varying sizes and technical maturity evaluate and adopt AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities as the technology continues to evolve.
