US and Taiwan collaborate to strengthen 5G supply chain

WASHINGTON – Taiwan’s Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) under the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs coordinated an exhibit of Taiwanese 5G companies at this week’s Taiwan Expos USA 2022 showcasing its strong ties and commitment to providing resilience in a tempestuous global market.

“This showcase demonstrates how Taiwan offers great business potential for U.S. companies catering to the needs of both public and private networks in the global marketplace.” The IDB said in a press release on the expo. Frosty relations between the U.S. and China among other causes has been a major disruptor to the global supply chain and particularly the production and distribution of semiconductors. On December 7, 2021, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs established the Technology Trade and Investment Collaboration (TTIC) to promote those bonds and target problem areas (semiconductors, electric vehicles) and encourage supply chain diversity.

The IDB has also liaised with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) under the U.S. Department of Commerce to promote cooperation in 5G and broadband infrastructure and in doing so invited support for The Prague Proposals on Telecommunications Supplier Diversity released last year.

“Through Taiwan's contributions to open and interoperable 5G network architectures, Taiwan is helping to drive progress on shared telecommunications security, resilience, and innovation priorities,” the IDB wrote. “Therefore, IDB supports the Prague Proposals on Telecommunications Supplier Diversity and will continue to deepen the bilateral 5G partnership through substantive actions through Taiwan-U.S. cooperation structures such as TTIC.”
