Specifically Speaking: Elisa Mula explains why designing security systems requires a ‘visionary approach’

NEW YORK—Elisa Mula knows the importance of understanding how different security systems and technologies can either conflict with or complement one another.

“Over time, I’ve immersed myself in learning about the latest technologies and industry-best practices,” says Mula, president of EMD (EM Designs), a boutique security consulting firm. “Collaborating with colleagues who possess exceptional technical expertise has enabled me to refine my ability to explain complex technologies in simple, understandable terms.”

EMDMula recognizes that designing and recommending products involves more than just technical considerations. It requires what she calls a “visionary approach” that provides innovative, out-of-the-box solutions, driven by a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities of advanced technologies.

“This skill set becomes crucial in translating not only what technology can achieve but also how different integrated technologies can work together to fulfill overarching security goals,” she explained.

As part of Security Systems News’ monthly column Specifically Speaking, the following is an exclusive Q&A with Mula:

SSN: What vertical markets does the company specialize in? Any interesting projects that you can mention?

MULA: We specify video surveillance, access control systems, mass notification systems and more, with a strong focus on sectors such as education, places of worship, law enforcement and, more recently, high-end museums. Currently, we are involved in designing and implementing security operation centers for two of the world's most renowned museums.

SSN: How did you get started in security and designing/specifying?

MULA: I began my journey into designing and specifying security systems with a foundational interest in technology and its potential to protect and enhance safety. Early in my career, I worked in roles that exposed me to various security challenges across different sectors, from educational institutions to law enforcement agencies. This experience allowed me to understand the unique needs and complexities of each environment.

In collaboration with our technical experts, I help bring to life the strategic operation of these systems, ensuring that they function cohesively and effectively to meet our clients' needs. I realize the importance of specification in creating systems that are not only effective but also customized to meet each client's specific requirements. My involvement in overseeing the design and implementation of comprehensive security operations is something I find both challenging and rewarding.

SSN: Can you talk about what new or emerging technologies you are seeing or specifying today?

MULA: I am particularly excited about advancements in access control systems. Manufacturers are intensifying their efforts to combat the threat posed by easily accessible hacking tools. These solutions are crucial for enhancing the security landscape.

Additionally, I serve as the vice chair of the Security Industry Association's (SIA’s) New Products and Solutions Awards Committee. At ISC West 2025, we witnessed remarkable technologies, notably PowerG introduced by Johnson Controls, featuring an intriguing anti-jamming frequency hopping ability. This innovation addresses vulnerabilities posed by hacking tools like the Flipper Zero that threaten traditional access control systems that are still prevalent today.

While the technology is currently deployed in a number of their wireless devices, they will be implementing it through access control readers in the near future.

SSN: What is your view on the industry moving forward?

MULA: I believe the security industry has many overlooked areas. While machine learning and buzzwords like AI may capture the spotlight, there are simple yet smart innovations capable of revolutionizing best practices across the sector. Addressing these basic gaps remains essential for advancing security standards.
