CO restaurant death leads to new laws, but can industry do more?

CENTEREACH, N.Y.—The death of a Long Island, N.Y. restaurant manager from carbon monoxide poisoning has prompted several Long Island communities to pass new CO requirements. However, the president of a Long Island fire company also believes the industry should do more to alert the public to the danger of CO by adding more features to fire system-connected detectors, such as digital displays of ambient CO levels and low-level CO alerts. But a manufacturer says that could lead to false alarms...

CO poisonings in two states may lead to expanded detector requirements

YARMOUTH, Maine—Calls to expand mandates for carbon monoxide detectors in commercial buildings in New York and Maine have resulted from recent cases in those states of poisonings by the deadly gas—one of them fatal. Fire alarm companies in both states told Security Systems News they support expansion of state CO laws and gave suggestions on cost effective ways businesses could add detectors. On Feb. 22 in a Long Island, N.Y. mall, 26 people were sickened at a Legal Sea Foods restaurant...

Proposed NYC fire law would require ECS in high-rises

NEW YORK—The city may mandate emergency communications systems in buildings higher than six stories after a man died in a high-rise fire this month while trying to escape down a smoke-filled stairway instead of remaining safely in his apartment.The measure, proposed by New York City Council member Corey Johnson, would apply to hundreds of existing buildings in the city if the council approves it.
