UL talks about cybersecurity in UL827

May 6, 2015Spencer Ives

When I asked UL's engineering manager, Steve Schmit, how the ISC West show was going, he said he spent a fair bit of the show discussing the recent updates to UL827, now including requirements for cybersecurity. “Now with [cybersecurity] in the standard, we're going to have conversations about [central station's] network security, how they keep their customers safe,” Schmit told Security Systems News. Cybersecurity is something previous standards hadn't formally  required, he said. These...

BeON seeks to secure those who don't want traditional tech

April 27, 2015Amy Canfield

LAS VEGAS—A startup has set its sights—or rather, its lights—on a market that has been elusive for decades. BeON is targeting homeowners who have no intention of investing in home security systems.BeON says that group, who wants nothing to do with cameras, control panels, sensors or the cloud, represents 80 percent of homeowners. “To get to that 80 percent, we need to take a wildly different approach,” says Alexei Erchak, CEO and co-founder of the company. “That...

The Great ISC West 2015 Roundup

April 22, 2015SSN Staff

ISC West 2015—The daily monitoring report

April 13, 2015Spencer Ives

Friday, Day 3 The last day, like the first, started off with a great meeting at the media stage. This time I met George De Marco, ESX chair, and talked about how the different ways booths look to bring in visitors, everything from booth design to attractions. Then I headed into the show floor for a meeting with Cliff Dice, company president and CEO, and Carol Enman, Dice SVP for strategic business. We talked a lot about the reception of Dice's cloud-hosted central monitoring software platform, now...

ISC West 2015—My Day-by-Day Doings

April 10, 2015Amy Canfield

Wrapping it up at ISC West 2015/Friday/Show Day 3 I put in a phone call to Jake Parker, SIA's director of government relations, about every other month. Jake gives me the rundown on activities on Capitol Hill that have direct impacts on the physical security industry. I then report on those impacts for Security Systems News. Jake is an invaluable source for SSN, but I've never had the chance to meet him face-to face until now. We finally sat down together at ISC West and had a friendly conversation...
